Founded in 1931, the Crispus Attucks Association of York sought to fill a glaring gap in York by meeting the social, cultural, and educational needs of the Black community. Now in our 95th year of service to the community CA is still focused on their mission to meet the needs of our community.
The most recent step to fulfilling our mission is the public grand opening of the Crispus Attucks York History & Culture Center on May 2, 2026. Hundreds gathered to celebrate this occasion as Mr. Robert “Bobby” Simpson welcomed the community to the new History & Culture Center by reminding them of CA’s purpose and commitment to this community. Bobby spoke about those who have supported CA over the decades and helped CA to be able to build and open this Center. The Center is filled with the images and stories of those who have helped CA grow and thrive into a four-block campus in the heart of York City.
Since beginning as Crispus Attucks CEO in 1979, Bobby has preserved CA’s history with the intent of sharing it with future generations. Bobby believes, “We need to protect our history for future generations and let our young people know that many good people live and work in our community. The CA History & Culture Center will do this.”
Among the other speakers at the grand opening were Representative Carol Hill-Evans who presented Mr. Simpson with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives that acknowledged and celebrated CA’s 95 years of service.
Dr. Scott Deisley, Interim Director of the History & Culture Center, Tim Tate, President and CEO of Stewart and Tate, Inc., and Frank Dittenhafer, President of Murphy & Dittenhafer, spoke about their involvements with the design and construction of the Center and the build out of the exhibits. The formal part of the program closed with recognition of local elected officials and a blessing on the community and the building by CA board member, Judy Ritter-Dickson.
Several children from the CA Early Learning Center brought smiles to all in attendance when they assisted with the official ribbon cutting and the welcoming of the community into the building for the first time. Several hundred community members spent the afternoon touring the building and experiencing the exhibits while enjoying each other’s fellowship
Throughout the day we saw smiles and tears of joy along with the sounds of stories being told. The memories that the exhibits brought back for visitors lead to conversations that brought people together as they discussed the common thread that CA has played throughout their lives.
