What are the hours for the CAY History & Culture Center?

The CAY History & Culture Center is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, First Fridays from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. We are closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Where is the CAY History & Culture Center located?

The CAY History & Culture Center is located at 45 E. Boundary Avenue, York, PA 17401. We are in downtown York, easily accessible from I-83 and convenient to visitors from Harrisburg, Lancaster, Hanover, and Baltimore.

How much does admission cost?

Adult day passes are $25 ($20 winter rate). Children ages 6-18 are $8 ($4 winter). Seniors and veterans are $10 ($5 winter). Annual memberships are available starting at $25 for seniors/veterans and $35 for individuals.

What is the Goodridge Freedom Center?

The William C. Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum is located at 123 E. Philadelphia Street in York, PA. It preserves the legacy of William C. Goodridge, a formerly enslaved man who became one of York's most successful businessmen and an Underground Railroad conductor. Admission is included with CAY HCC membership.

Can I book a group tour or school field trip?

Yes! The CAY History & Culture Center offers group experiences and educational tours for schools, community organizations, and other groups. Contact us at hcc@crispusattucks.org to plan your visit.

How can I donate artifacts or share my family's history?

You can contribute photographs, documents, oral histories, and artifacts through our Donate/Loan Artifacts page or our Share Your Black History campaign. Your contributions help preserve African American heritage in York County for future generations.

There is parking directly in front of the building at 45 E Boundary Avenue and parking in the back of the Crispus Attucks Community Center at 605 S Duke Street.

A virtual map is displayed on the first floor by the elevator, and physical copies are available at the front desk.

Can I leave the center and reenter?

If you bought a ticket for the day, you may reenter as many times as you’d like that same day. Members may visit as many times as they wish.

Membership is not required to attend events, but members receive discounted event pricing.

Will my membership automatically renew?

We’ll notify you when your membership is up for renewal. You can then stop by or renew online at your convenience.

Visiting with Family

Is the museum kid-friendly?

Yes! Most of the museum is family-friendly, with interactive exhibits for all ages, baby changing stations in all restrooms, and strollers welcome throughout. We recommend parental guidance for the second floor, which covers the history of the 1969 York race riots.

Is there mature content?

The history of the 1969 race riots in York is shown on the second floor. Video of ammunition, recreated gunshots, dogs barking, and images of shot-out cars are shown.

Is the Center wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The History & Culture Center is fully wheelchair accessible, including the rooftop and courtyard.

Exhibits & Events

When will there be exhibit changes?

Our temporary exhibits rotate twice a year, in May and November. This includes our temporary art displays, CAY exhibit, family heirlooms exhibit, and Bobby Simpson music boxes exhibit. Check back each season for fresh content and new stories.
